Although normal glide path angles are three degrees, VASI lights at some airports may be as high as 4.5 degrees to grant proper obstacle clearance. If you see two red lights over two white lights, you’re on the approach path. The visual approach path of the VASI provides safe obstruction clearance within plus or minus ten degrees of the extended runway centerline and to four NM from the runway threshold. These lights are visible from 3-5 miles throughout the day and up to twenty miles or more at night. The Lagos Airport domestic runway, which was re-commissioned in 2006 after refurbishment and rehabilitation, has been without runway lights. Without runway lighting for night operations, the runway is shut at sunset, forcing the domestic terminal and airlines to wind down operations at dusk - the peak air business globally. Daily operations begin and end in Lagos for most aircraft. The airport is central to the operations of all domestic carriers. Consequently, Runway 18L/36R was closed to flight operations during that time. The project, which commenced effectively on July 8, 2022, was expected to last for 90 days.
